The RPM Social Club were overdue a get together, and so headed down to the local drift go-kart racing track for a competitive Friday evening of speed and sliding.
After a quick video briefing and instruction on the technicalities involved in the very technical reverse function of the vehicles, we made our way down to the pits.
With a Grand prix race format, the group were split into two teams of six. Helmets on, the first team hopped into their cars and revved their engines. Ready for the green light.
At go, foot met floor and the group went off, screeching towards the first bend. Suddenly, an internal voice was heard by all, “pump the gas, to stay in control around the bends!” For many it was too late. The highly polished concrete spared no fool and saw drivers spinning out into the tyre barriers. An early lesson learned.
Drifting around the bends was a fine art, mastered by some and attempted by all. There was nothing synchronised about the performance on the track, however there were some excellent displays of control, skill and nerve.
The top three racers from each team then went head to head to battle out the number one spot. The track staff deemed these racers worthy of even faster cars and swapped out the cars on the track for the sprinter versions. A mini triumph for each of the finalists.
The end result showed consistency of speed and control for the top three place holders. But an outstanding display of skill was demonstrated by the leader of the pack and overall winner – Aaron Dwight. Well done Aaron.
There was some excellent driving to be seen on the track and lots of fun and effort from the less practiced members of the crew.
