What is Wire Cutting / EDM?

Wire cutting is also known as wire cut electrical discharge machining (EDM) and wire cutting. During EDM a thin single-strand metal wire, which is normally brass, is fed through the workpiece and submerged in dielectric fluid.

At RPM we generally use wire EDM for wire cutting, press tools, injection moulds, extrusion dies, form tools, vacuum tubes, splines and gears. Metal plates up to around 300mm can be cut using wire-cut EDM, along with punches, tools, and dies from hard metals that are difficult to machine using other methods.
